Only female medical students are accepted due to the nature of the hospital. Junior Doctors with a few years experience particularly in paediatrics obstetrics and gynaecology would be particularly useful. Set in the foothills of the Himalayas this sixty-bed hospital provides care to rural families who suffer from diseases common in the West such as diabetes as well as from TB typhoid burns etc. Large numbers of ill children and women with obstetrical emergencies and complications are also attended to. The hospital is in a small village with a population of several thousand located three hours north of the capital city and on an ancient silk route. The area is predominantly agrarian and mountainous with a quite warm summer weather and occasional snow in the winter.The hospital has sixty beds divided into male female obstetric wards a dozen private rooms and 15-bed nursery. Two operating rooms are in use. Several hundred patients are seen each day in outpatient clinics. The hospital was started in 1956 at its present location.

There are opportunities for medical students at the hospital observing and participating in all functions of a physician commensurate with abilities. Only senior medical students are accepted.

The qualified student would be under a staff physician supervision participating in all daily activities of ward rounds outpatient clinics surgery and emergency calls. In this challenging environment it is helpful to have a hardy personality and a good sense of humor. An on-field commitment of at least one month is necessary. Medical students should be in their 4th year.

Started as a community health and development project this organisation has expanded to include a 150-bed hospital training for midwives and nurses a research hub and an English-speaking school for children up to grade 10. The project has a holistic approach which seeks spiritual physical social and emotional transformation. There is a paediatric rehabilitation department which treats mainly children with cerebral palsy but also children with other disabilities. There is a clubfoot program and assistive devices are produced on location.

The hospital operates a rehabilitation unit for disabled children for up to 6 inpatients and over 1500 outpatients both at the hospital and in remote community clinics. Adult therapy services are offered for in- and out-patients. The project is seeking a physiotherapist or occupational therapist to give clinical support and guidance to our local therapy assistants in all three therapy disciplines. Other paramedical nursing and medical staff are also sought. A commitment of at least 1 year is preferable.

Some clinical experience is preferred. A successful applicant should be prepared to meet clinical needs as they arise as well as contribute to training. Those with research interests will find opportunity to work on existing projects.
